The Diary of a Hip Hop Kid
Erik Elijah Brumfield's passion project — a photography and art memorabilia book that serves as a visual diary documenting his journey from a graffiti kid to a music creative. This show represents the activation of one chapter in this ongoing narrative.
Born into the industry as the son of legendary Young & Rubicam / VML Senior Art Director Julie Brumfield, Erik crafted his first commercial at just nine years old. He helped shape the neo-soul movement, working with D'Angelo at EMI Records and collaborating with titans like Lyor Cohen, Russell Simmons, and Gary Harris at Def Jam. Recruited and mentored by legendary music video directors Diane Martel and Brett Ratner, he witnessed and contributed to the creation of classic hip-hop music videos during the 90s.
At Cornerstone Promotion, he played a pivotal role in elevating artists like Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, and Timbaland while helping launch The Fader, working with powerhouse brands such as Nike, Adidas, Microsoft, and the NBA.
